Awesome post Mike. I wrote about this same thing and I was basically attacked by a so-called SEO who didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

Here's a link to ONE several posts I wrote on the topic. I hope you like it. (The post title is weird, but I have my reasons...)

http://activerain.com/blogsview/60797/Top-Agent-SEO-and

Karen

That software is Link POPULARITY software to find out how many links you HAVE, not to beg for reciprocal links from others. It is a link popularity gauge that shows you the need to send out press releases, articles and gain valuable ONE WAY links. It MEASURES links that the search engines know about.

The software I was referring to as bad was one that generates form letter type emails begging others to link to you. When you do that, you must then add, verify and manage THEIR links. That is pointless.

I have several clients that offer reciprocal links through software that allows others to immediately post their links to the client sites. One of those clients has over 3000 outbound links and only 363 INBOUND links pointing to his site. If he once had links from those reciprocal linkers, they have since been removed by the reciprocating webmaster.

I pointed this out to him and he said, "Yes, I know, but I just don't have time to check up on people once the link is added. I really do need to clean house."

EXACTLY the problem! Wasting your time checking up on reciprocal linkers to be sure they maintain those links is idiocy when you don't have time to do it. How much is your time worth? Spend your valuable time gaining ONE WAY inbound links and quit wasting time with the low value reciprocals!

Mike, I'm not a big fan of the practice of reciprocal linking because #1 it's so damn time consuming, and #2 those canned link swap emails clog my mailbox. I agree that it's value has certainly been diluted especially this past year. I visited your page that houses your article "Reciprocal Linking is Dead!" It appears to me that you're straddling the fence. If you really believe this and think these exchanges are turkeys, then why do offer reciprocal linking software on your Web page?
